WALTER LAMBERT’S POPULARITY
Meet the 'celebs' of 1903 in Walter Lambert's 3.7 metre-long painting, 'Popularity', in which stars of the Edwardian British Music Hall mingle opposite the Old Vic theatre.
Popularity shows us that celebrity 120 years ago wasn't so different to how it is today. You see it all, from performers with substance abuse issues to racist stereotypes enforced by those in the entertainment industry.
I produced this video in order to zone in on the intricate detail and myriad of stories being told in just one painting. The painting is not without divisive elements, and I worked in tandem with the BAME network and art curators at the museum, who helped develop appropriate angles and language for exploring this painting.
